Cutting Ties to Your Expectations

Have you ever asked yourself why you expect so much from others? Far too many people expect others to be, act or behave as they would but why. Does it make you feel better in the knowing that others are just like you? Does it make you feel like you are in control? Or does it come from how others in your life hold expectations of you? More than likely it comes from believing that your way is the right way or the only way, but we know that’s not true. NOW is the time to cut ties to your expectations, to stop worrying about everyone else, and start worrying about yourself.


Of course it is reasonable to want others to treat you well and with respect. But then again, how can you have any expectations of others when everyone is different and especially when everyone is on their own unique path in THEIR life. Perhaps someone has not learned how to respect others because they were disrespected throughout their life. Or maybe someone grew up in a negative and hostile environment and doesn’t know how to be kind and loving. The only expectations there should be, are of yourself. When you expect only the best of and for yourself, only the best will show up in your life experience.

The one thing I believe we as humans forget is that we do not have to include anything or anyone in our lives if they do not make us feel good. How you choose to do things and live your life is totally about who YOU are. The way you do things is probably the “right” way in your mind, as it should be, because it is right for you. If people are not living the way you do or acting as you would, it doesn’t make them a bad person nor does it make their life “wrong”. They are being who THEY are the best they know how. Just because you want to share your candy doesn’t mean everyone else has to share theirs.


When you are in tune with your Inner Life there are no expectations because those things don’t matter any longer. What matters is love, compassion, well-being, peace, joy and happiness. What matters is giving without expecting anything in return. What matters is being who you are while allowing others to be who they are. TODAY, allow yourself the gift of cutting ties to your expectations and see how calming and peaceful life becomes.

Spring Clean Your Life

649When was the last time you did some spring cleaning?  And I am not just talking about your closets, basement or garage.  I am talking about spring cleaning your life.  There is certainly nothing wrong with taking inventory once or twice a year.  Decide on what is pleasing in and enhancing your life and let go of what isn’t.  In fact, this is a healthy process of staying in tune with your Inner Life because it allows you to keep growing and moving forward in a positive manner. 

When your life becomes nothing more than a routine or in some cases a chore, it is time to do some spring cleaning.  It is very common for people to become complacent with their life and relationships.  You may think that where you are is as good as it gets or as far as you can go but you are further from the truth.  Sometimes all it takes is a little freshening up to get things moving again.  

650The early years start out fresh and airy but before you know it ten years have passed you by and you and your life are stale and stagnant.  To fully understand the significance of spring cleaning, think of how you would feel if you were to wake up tomorrow morning stuck in the mud, unable to move or breathe.  It would not feel very good would it?  Unfortunately, this is what happens to so many people but at a much slower pace.  Some don’t even realize it until they take a good long hard look at their lives. 

651If you are completely happy with your life and relationships, then keep doing what you are doing.  If it works, keep on working it.  But if you are one of millions who suffer from unsatisfying and unhappy lives, why not take the first step in spring cleaning your life. 

Ask yourself how your life feels and then make two separate lists.  One of all the things you are happy with and one with all the things you are not happy with.  This should include the people in your life, your habits, behaviors, career, responsibilities, your home, material possessions, etc.  It is important to be totally honest with yourself especially when it comes to relationships.  Just because someone is a family member, friend or partner doesn’t mean they can’t drag you down.  They may be genuinely good people who you care about but if they encourage, enable, support or add any type of negativity in your life, how can they be enhancing it?  Regardless of who or what, how YOU feel is all that matters. 

646Once your two lists are made, you can start your spring cleaning of the things you don’t need, want or that make you unhappy.  There is no need to tackle the whole list all at once.  Select one thing a week to work on so long as you are doing something to freshen your life back up again.  You’d be surprised at how quickly things will change and how much better you will feel.  Do whatever it takes for you and your life to feel good, to feel breathable, to feel relaxed and peaceful, but most importantly to feel and be truly happy.  The time is always NOW and there is always time for spring cleaning NOW!

How Much Does Your Life Weigh?

What is life weight?  Life weight is what you carry around with you on a day-to-day basis that you do not need.  Two of the heaviest pieces of weight we carry with us is past and future weight. We clog ourselves up with negative events from the past and worries about the future not realizing how much damage it is doing to our bodies and minds. This type of life weight will cause you to be out of tune with your Inner Life creating stress, anxiety, depression, weight problems, addictions, frustration, anger, fear and/or disease.


The only weight you should be concerned about at any given moment in time is the weight you need right NOW. Surprisingly enough the weight you need right now does not exist. There is no life weight when you live in the here and now because there is nothing in the present moment to weigh you down.  Why is this?  Because nothing from the past or future ever exists when you are focused and living in the present moment!  

Let’s say for example that someone hurt you many years ago and yet you still hold onto the pain.  You avoid getting close to anyone in fear of being hurt again.  You have lost your confidence and you have no trust when it comes to relationships.  Do you need this memory and the pain in order to live?  No, of course not.  So why do you allow it to weigh you down?  Why do you allow it to control you?  If you were to lose the weight of this past event, how do you think you would feel?  Yes, you would feel relief and you would feel good again not only about yourself but about the possibility of future relationships.  


If you would like to figure out how much your life weighs take out several pieces of paper and write down all the negative past events that you think about on a regular basis.  Write down every future worry you have.  Now take some time to read and re-read your lists and then ask yourself, being totally honest, how much of this stuff do I need RIGHT NOW?  I can guarantee you won’t need any of it and you won’t stop breathing from the lack of it.  In fact, you will probably begin to breathe easier, feeling lighter and lighter as you get rid of each and every piece of weight.

Each day when you wake up, take a few minutes before getting out of bed to remind yourself that you do not need all of your life’s weight in order to survive.  So before your feet hit the floor, leave them all behind and start your day off with a very deep breath of relief knowing there will be nothing weighing you down today! All you need is you in the present moment so don’t waste another minute of your life!
