Inner Life Breathing is a valuable practice. Not only does it instantly move you into the present moment, putting you back in tune with your Inner Life, but it also promotes over-all feelings of well-being, relaxation, relieves tension, stress, anxiety and helps with insomnia. Inner Life breathing will also increase the oxygen in your bloodstream which will help lower blood pressure and heart rate. Once it becomes a part of your daily routine, it can be done anywhere at any time.
To start, you may find it helpful to begin your practice at bedtime and upon waking when you can close your eyes and leave all distractions behind. In time, “being within yourself” will come naturally and effortlessly.
Turn your attention to your natural rhythm of breathing. Take a few minutes to feel yourself breathing as you normally would. Feel everything about it from inhaling to exhaling to how the breath feels flowing through your body. Get to know your breathing by becoming one with it. Gradually begin a slower and deeper breathing pattern. It is important to keep focusing on your breathing from within by feeling it, not thinking about it. The more you feel it, the more “alive” you will become from being in the present moment, from being in tune with your Inner Life. I use this method at bedtime and upon waking for 5 – 10 minutes and throughout the day for a few minutes at a time as needed.
Aside from the benefits I already mentioned, practicing Inner Life breathing on a regular basis will free you from the confines of your mind. It will move you into the present moment where the past and future do not exist. It is where you will find peace and harmony. This is important to remember when faced with an unwanted life situation. The moment you feel yourself experiencing a negative emotion, turn your attention inward and begin your breathing practice. This will slow down the mind and keep your negative emotions from getting out of control.
